The 26 tracks on this anthology have two things in common: all were released on Laurie or affiliated labels, and all were co-written or written by Ernie Maresca (who is the featured artist on four of the songs, too). Maresca is most known as the composer or co-composer of Dion's ''Runaround Sue,'' ''The Wanderer,'' and ''Lovers Who Wander,'' as well as for his own 1962 hit ''Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out).'' But did his talent merit a sweep through the secondary flops from his pen, some of which didn't come out until the 1980s (though apparently everything here was recorded between the late '50s and early '70s)? To be harsh, no. It is a jumble of largely mediocre, formulaic pop/rock, much of it indebted to the doo wop music of the late '50s and early '60s, even if much of it was actually recorded in the mid- to late '60s. Some of it is worth more than one listen, including the early Dion & the Belmonts singles ''No One Knows'' and ''A Lover's Prayer,'' though those have long been easily acquired elsewhere. The 1966 Chiffons cuts ''Open Your Eyes (I Will Be There)'' and ''Up on the Bridge'' show a greater pop-soul sophistication than the other material, though they're not up to the level of that girl group's best hits. Bernadette Carroll's ''Try Your Luck'' is not-bad girl group-style pop, and the Four Coins' ''I'll Never Love Again'' is decent 1966 harmony pop/rock rather in the style of groups like the Vogues, the Tokens, and Jay & the Americans. Unfortunately, some of the most memorable other cuts stand out for the wrong reasons: the Teardrops' ''Hey Gingerbread'' has grating sub-Frankie Valli falsetto vocals, while Maresca's own 1969 single ''The Spirit of Woodstock'' is a tribute to the famous rock festival, but with a hamfisted hipness reeking of inauthenticity. Yet it is not as bad as his 1968 45 ''What Is a Marine,'' in which Maresca answers the question with a spoken monolog against a syrupy orchestral backing. Sample line: ''A marine is a magical creature, you can take him off your mailing list but not out of your heart.'' Gads! ~ Richie Unterberger
