Nu slechts € 17,99 Secondhand Sureshots is a fascinating CD/DVD combo pack documenting an ?experiment in creative sound recycling? held by the left-field hip-hop label Stones Throw in conjunction with the non-profit, internet radio station Dublab. The idea was to send four beatmakers -- Daedelus, J-Rocc, Nobody, and Ras G -- to the local thrift store?s dollar album section with five bucks in hand. Whichever five gems they found could be cut, looped, sliced, and diced into a new track, the results of which would be pressed on an acetate which would then be sneaked back into the thrift store?s inventory. The film part of Sureshots isn?t so much about that subversive final act as it is the creative process. The four producers give insight into their crate-crawling selection process, which is mostly judging a book by its cover, but occasionally the traditional music business junkie stuff comes out, like when J-Rocc offers funk heads the expert advice of ?Don?t buy anything on Concord.? There?s also an amusing bit about how L.A. thrift stores are absolutely bursting with discarded Barbra Streisand records, and the four subjects are a pleasure to hang with, each being as witty and open as you?d expect. The end results are all different, all astounding, and all available on the accompanying CD, which adds a megamix by Kutmah along with some other odds and ends.
