Beyond Hell / Above Heaven

Nu slechts € 18,99 Volbeat's thing is to fuse old-school hard rock, Elvis worship, and no-frills power metal reminiscent of Iced Earth and Helloween -- before either band went polished and fluffy -- into a heady mix with the kinetic energy of a charging rhino, but more attractive. Beyond Hell/Above Heaven delivers all of the above in spades, but, like many attempts at synthesis, offers it on a song-to-song basis instead of a completely cohesive whole. On certain tracks, the group simply rocks like the Stray Cats on an angry day; meanwhile, songs like ''7 Shots'' come across as a grim heavy metal assault bordering on thrash, and sounds by far too tough for the songs surrounding it, like a drunken Conan the Barbarian with a machine gun crashing a rock show. Thankfully, for most of the album's duration, Volbeat don't try to explore extremes of their own musical tastes and just stick to loud and melodic riffs that owe AC/DC as much as they do the blues, but also come with a clever pop sensitivity and thundering production on par with many nu-metal albums. The music feels dated, as may be expected, but less so than it has the right to be with this set of influences, - all thanks to the polished, chugging hooks that make tunes like ''Heaven Nor Hell'' or ''Fallen'' perfect fodder for modern rock radio stations. This doesn't completely negate the impact of the record's identity crisis -- at times, it's hard to figure out whether this is metal, hard rock, or power pop -- but there are worse things to be forgiven than catchiness, anyway. ~ Alexey Eremenko
