Nu slechts € 17,99 Thanks to the almost child-like cover artwork (imagine a kid's interpretation of Rainbow Rising) gracing their first album Rainbowride, Swedish stoner rock/doomsters Kaptain Sun attain a lighthearted touch sorely lacking from this often dour and depressing genre. Indeed, the band's surprisingly energetic riffs (clearly schooled in the Cathedral sound, but twice as fast) and imaginatively psychedelic lyrics (note the spectacularly titled ''Cosmic Magic From the Doomed Planets Below'') are, for the most part, far less morose than most of their peers. But that's not to suggest that Kaptain Sun are just horsing around here -- far from it. Hard-driving numbers like ''Invisible Dragons,'' ''Lovedemon,'' and ''Freedom'' are propelled by unquestionable conviction and highly skilled and melodious solos from lead player Andrey. And, with their rolling, rumbling, churning power chords, thoughtfully assembled longer jams such as ''The Tides,'' ''Golden Harvest,'' and the title track successfully avoid the boring repetition that plagues far too many doom albums -- even if the last two both lock into seemingly unending harmony solos during their conclusions. Discerning listeners may also notice that vocalist Andy Wong's ragged, full-throated howl sounds remarkably similar to that of Entombed screamer L.G. Petrov. But besides betraying Kaptain Sun's past worship of Sweden's ultimate death & roll machine (they used to be called Clandestine, after all), this resemblance does them no disservice. Anyway, you know where all of this is going: if the prospect of Cathedral jamming with Entombed sounds like a promising one, chances are you'll really dig Rainbowride's fine assortment of songs. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
