Nu slechts € 17,99 The Antikaroshi's first album, Crushed Neocons, is ofttimes as impenetrable and perplexing as the German group's moniker; coming off like a collision between hardcore heroes Fugazi, noise rock mad scientists the Jesus Lizard, and, why not, the best all-purpose prog rock band for describing something truly ''out there'': King Crimson. Above and beyond all like-band comparisons, though, innately unpredictable songs like ''Downtown,'' ''Sound Advice,'' and ''Thin Line'' are ultimately about freedom from convention, wreaking all sorts of havoc with stereotypical rock & roll arrangements by jumping and jiving between discordant riffs and chiming melodies with their syncopated restlessness. Needless to say, the group sacrifices most any chance of accessibility with this strategy, but attentive listeners may still glimpse a few pop music threads nestled deep amid the Antikaroshi's angular attack and mysterious songwriting motivations, occasionally bringing to mind the Police, at their ''artsiest'' (e.g. ''Masoko Tanga,'' ''Demolition Man,'' etc.). If anything here feels undoubtedly pear-shaped, it is the vocals, which are really nothing special throughout (more functional than all that accomplished), as well as some of the group's rare moments of simplicity, like the jingle-jangling first half of ''Contradiction'' (which lacks the same, aerobic agility of its harder-edged peers). But since the muso audience to which Crushed Neocons is probably targeted value musicianship well above vocal prowess, the Antikaroshi will likely click immediately with their target consumers, and have a lot to be proud of on this eclectic and thought-provoking first effort. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
