€ 12,99Bill Nelson fans take note: The guitarist is mostly a guest star on this album. He sings on only one track, the oddly poppy psychedelic opener ''Luna Park'' (which features some great Beach Boys-on-acid harmonies in spots), and is only a hired gun on the rest, contributing guitar and samples to the polyglot worldbeat stew created by mastermind Yumiko Morioka. The results are intriguing fusions of Asian and European musical tradition, thankfully free of the usual ''put a disco beat behind an exotic instrument'' clichés. Songs like the wonderfully titled ''Housewives on Drugs'' (featuring a Breton-style fiddle part, Asian woodwinds, and a rhythmic track built on what sounds like a hammered dulcimer) and the funky, rockish ''Tangram'' are more than new age dithering, and even though Nelson is not as featured a player as some of his fans might like, it's clear that his sensibility fits in wonderfully with that of Culturemix. ~ Stewart Mason |
