Nu slechts € 9,99 Recorded in the same breath of time that saw Spear of Destiny open for U2 and headline Hammersmith Odeon, Live at the National is another in the series of live Spear albums that fail to make the ''essential'' rating, but which have their moments regardless. The recently released Outlands, of course, dominates the set list, and fine versions of ''Miami Vice,'' ''Pumpkin Man,'' and ''Strangers'' all peal out of the speakers; older material, too, is given a fair airing, and it's only when you compare the performances here of ''Liberator,'' ''Young Men,'' and ''Mickey'' with those that pop up on earlier live recordings that you can truly put your finger on all that Spear lost when the classic band shattered -- a certain sassy confidence, a brutal, fist-pumping arrogance, the sense of absolute invincibility that comes from creating music like this. Ignore that deficiency, and this isn't a bad album at all. ~ Dave Thompson
