Nu slechts € 17,50 America, circa the summer of 2004, was a land crackling with pre-election tension, frustration, and hope. This album of garage-rock protest songs perfectly captures that zeitgeist. Shortly after the release of his 2004 ''comeback'' record TRAVELS IN THE SOUTH, singer/songwriter/producer and former dB's jangle-meister Chris Stamey teamed up with his Hoboken, NJ cronies Yo La Tengo for this scorching set of songs that lean towards social commentary. Front-loaded with covers, A QUESTION OF TEMPERATURE's first half roars, suggesting a man bewildered, but not beaten, by the forces that conspire to control his destiny. Eugene McDaniels's classic soul screed ''Compared to What''--a pure expression of exasperation with The Man--is given a caustic reading here, the lyrics as timely as ever. Other well-chosen cover tunes include Cream's cynical ''Politician'', the Yardbirds' bitter ''Shapes of Things'', and the wistful ''Venus'' by Television. Stamey also contributes his own ''The Summer Sun'', a pretty, blue-sky pop number from his early days, which features an engaging melody and lovely harmony vocals. The bonus track, ''V.O.T.E. PSA'', is a public service announcement that serves as a bittersweet reminder of those heady days before the Kerry-Bush showdown.
