Guitarist/singer Jon Langford cut his teeth with the Mekons, who eventually mutated into a first-rate country-rock band, but began as died-in-the-wool punks in late '70s Britiain. The Waco Brothers are a natural extension of Langford's work with the latter-day Mekons, and COWBOY IN FLAMES should appeal to anyone enamored of that band. The Waco Brothers marry the spirit of vintage British punk to traditional American country. Hoarse, vehement vocals and thrashing guitars mix with graceful steel guitar and mandolin on songs that trade the usual Nashville brand of romantic pathos for intelligent socio-political observations that never become didactic. Most importantly, the Waco Brothers can rock that two-step like Satan's plough-mule was nipping at their heels.
