Killing Ground

After bottoming out creatively in the late '80s, New Wave of British Heavy Metal survivors Saxon spent most of the 1990s slowly rebuilding their career with a string of increasingly confident, quality albums, finally culminating in the group's first American concert appearances in over a decade to close out the decade. So it was fair to assume that the future looked fairly bright to Saxon's musicians as they stared down the new millennium, the wind at their backs, armed with a new album in hand named Killing Ground. Well, think again, because when their record company, SPV, saw its U.S. distributor go belly-up just weeks before the album's release, consumers were suddenly forced to dig deeper into their pockets to pay for pricey import copies, and obviously far fewer were willing to do so. Which is really too bad because, though it doesn't quite match the songwriting highs of its impressive predecessor, Metalhead, Killing Ground offers its fair share of bright moments. The excellent title track, along with its atmospheric intro, elicit fond memories of 1984's ''Crusader,'' and lead right into a fine version of King Crimson's ''Court of the Crimson King,'' which sounds so obviously tailored for Saxon's sound, it's a wonder they didn't think of covering it sooner. The remaining material also stays true to the band's metallic tradition, but rarely leaves a serious lasting impact. Despite its title, first single ''Coming Home'' is not a retread of Dogs of War's excellent ''Big Twin Rolling (Coming Home)'' (unfortunately), and the epic ''Shadows on the Wall'' veers off track due to some misguided nu-metal-style, detuned riffing. ''Hell Freezes Over'' and ''Running for the Border'' (quick, call Taco Bell's marketing department!) are rather plodding, uncommitted headbanging affairs, but semi-thrash-outs like ''Dragon's Lair'' and ''Deeds of Glory'' are somewhat better for their intensity (as you'd expect), and album closer ''Rock Is Life'' is actually a lot better than its cheesy title suggests. All in all, though, the term ''workmanlike'' feels very apropos for describing Saxon's efforts on Killing Ground, which is recommended for their die-hard fans only. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
