Nu slechts € 14,99 Although Look Who's Blue was the title of a 1960 album by Don Gibson, and although all 12 of its songs comprise the first dozen cuts on this CD, this isn't a straight reissue of that LP. Despite its Look Who's Blue title, the CD's actually a 24-track disc that also includes, in its second half, the entirety of his 1958 album Oh, Lonesome Me. It's thus a fairly extensive selection of material he cut around the time he achieved his greatest success as a pop artist, with three of his four Top 40 pop hits. Look Who's Blue is one of many albums someone might periodically cite as an example of how the concept LP dates back far earlier than the progressive rock era, as most of the songs are about feeling some various shade of blue. That was such a strong streak in Gibson's music that it wasn't much of a reach to build an album around that mood, and the record is largely given over to country-pop that's melancholy even by the standards of downbeat country-pop. He does get into a jauntier mood on the hit ''Just One Time,'' and there are other slight influences from the pop/rock of the day on songs like ''My Hands Are Tied,'' but it's a pretty sedate set on the whole. Oh, Lonesome Me is livelier, in keeping with the well-known title song, though ''Bad, Bad Day'' is a transparent rewrite of the album's other hit, ''Blue, Blue Day.'' Traces of Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers peep through occasionally, but it's decidedly more country than pop/rock, most famously on the ballad ''I Can't Stop Lovin' You,'' perhaps Gibson's most celebrated composition (though done much more memorably in its hit Ray Charles cover version). This is fairly interesting, if not quite sparkling, country-pop of the period, but unfortunately the sound quality isn't always top-notch, with some apparent transferred-from-vinyl clicks on ''It Only Takes a Little While'' in particular. ~ Richie Unterberger
