Nu slechts € 14,99 Though not overly extensive, with 11 tracks from three sessions undertaken from 1977 to 1981 (as well as a live 2006 version of ''Vindictive''), this is more interesting than the usual compilation of BBC recordings. The first two sessions -- from September 19, 1977 and April 17, 1978 -- considerably predate the release of the Slits' first single and LP (in September 1979). They also serve as the sole recordings the band made when drummer Palmolive was still in the lineup, as she left shortly after the second session took place. The first session, in fact, marked the first time they'd been in a studio. As you'd expect, then, those sessions (including six songs from their 1979 debut album Cut, as well as one, ''Vindictive,'' not included on their studio releases) are pretty raw. But not off-puttingly so; even at this point, they were not a by-the-numbers early punk band, mixing unusual, jagged rhythms and Ari Up's distinctively unique swooping vocals into their forthright attack, sounding pretty together as far as 1977-1978 U.K. punks went. The 1981 recordings have two songs from their then-new album The Return of the Giant Slits; the rap-influenced single ''In the Beginning'' and ''Wedding Song,'' an African wedding song taught to them by Neneh Cherry, who'd joined since the earlier sessions. While some hardcore punk devotees might prefer the earlier sides, these show the band (expanded with the addition of Cherry and some male musicians) going into decidedly more complex and ultimately interesting directions, and taking more influences from cutting-edge funk, dub, and rap. With a booklet of lengthy, photo-filled liner notes from Slits biographer Zoë Howe, this is a recommended supplement to this notable group's rather slim discography. ~ Richie Unterberger
