Nu slechts € 36,50 In the 1960s, there was a thriving music scene in East Los Angeles' Chicano community, and no band of the day was more popular or acclaimed than Thee Midniters. Their live shows are the stuff of legend today and they were one of L.A.'s biggest groups through much of the decade, but Thee Midniters never earned much of a following outside their home town, largely because they released nearly all their records through their own Whittier Records label and they were successful enough on the West Coast that they didn't need to tour. Greatest collects 14 tunes from Thee Midniters' glory days, although a few of their best-known tunes fail to make the cut (most notably their late-era political anthem ''Chicano Power''). And while Norton Records assembled an excellent anthology in 2006, In Thee Midnite Hour!!!, that collected the cream of their wild rock & roll and rhythm & blues sides (many on CD for the first time), Greatest devotes most of its playing time to the soulful ballad style of lead singer Little Willie G., aka Willie Garcia. But if Greatest isn't as exciting as In Thee Midnite Hour!!!, this material leaves no doubt that Garcia was a remarkably gifted and versatile vocalist, capable of the powerful, full-bodied soul shouting of ''Love Special Delivery,'' the hot-wired rock & roll of ''Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,'' and the mellow romanticism of ''Dreaming Casually,'' and sounding as if he was born to sing them all. There are plenty of folks who consider Little Willie G. to be one of the greatest Latino soul singers to ever step up to a microphone, and if Greatest doesn't capture the full scope of what made Thee Midniters a great band, it offers plenty of evidence that Willie's reputation wasn't just talk. ~ Mark Deming
