Once the dust had settled and the bodies had been buried where the hugely eclectic and influential Floridian death metal scene was concerned, arguably no other group became a harder act to follow than death/jazz pioneers Atheist. While groundbreaking and technically proficient outfits like Death and Morbid Angel certainly proved more widely influential, the notably sluggish Obituary showed there was quality to be had in simplicity, and the equally freaky but ultra-obscure Cynic carved an extraterrestrial niche all their own, Atheist's stupefying complexities truly never found a worthy heir. At least not until the band's original drummer, Steve Flynn, assembled a similarly unique group named Gnostic in the mid-2000s, to carry on the band's otherworldly metronome, as it were. And ironically, it was essentially the members of Gnostic that ultimately helped to reconstitute Atheist with Flynn and original vocalist Kelly Shaefer (who had spent the intervening years fronting respectable hard rockers Neurotica) when the legendary band was resurrected to perform a few rapturously received reunion shows, and later to record its first album in 17 years (and fourth overall), 2010's Jupiter. So what's changed after all this time, fans may ask. Well, Flynn's colossal abilities remain intact, but Shaefer was no longer capable of handling Atheist's complex guitar athletics due to carpal tunnel syndrome and handed off the six-string duties to the talented Gnostic duo of Chris Baker and Jonathan Thompson (original Atheist guitarist Rand Burkey is AWOL), so the only thing seriously missing from Atheist 2.0 is a strong four-string presence, on par with formidable predecessors Tony Choy and the sadly deceased Roger Patterson. However, that oversight notwithstanding, Jupiter largely does the Atheist legacy proud with its familiarly convoluted, ever unpredictable arrangements wed to unrelenting savagery, a bafflingly dense musical landscape where 4/4 time is the most exotic and underutilized ingredient of all. As the album's outrageously challenging compositions slowly sink in, awe-inspiring standouts emerge in the eight-minute marathon-at-a-sprint of ''Second to Sun,'' the cello-introduced ''Live and Live Again,'' the relatively immediate ''When the Beast,'' and a few religion-bashing screeds honoring the band's name in ''Fraudulent Cloth'' and ''Faux King Christ.'' OK, so neither these standouts nor Jupiter as a whole is that major revolutionary next step that some fans may have expected from this band's comeback record, but the fact that the album even lives up to lofty standards past is a triumph in its own right, and it proves yet again that no one really sounds quite like Atheist. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
