Two of the most important films of 1960 were from Italy: Michaelangelo Antonioni's L'Avventura and Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. These movies were not just landmarks in both filmmakers' careers, but landmarks in Italian cinema as a whole. So while they were by different directors, it makes sense to put music from the soundtrack to both of these on one 78-minute CD. The scores of both films were impressive, but Giovanni Fusco's music for L'Avventura made its soundtrack the better of the two, if only because it contained more pieces that were individually memorable on their own merits. In particular, the theme song boasts a riveting combination of spy-like motifs, rock & roll, and tense Mediterranean melodies and instrumentation. Nothing else from the score matches it, but the other selections are diverse evocations of jittery moods, again sometimes using arrangements and tunes that are distinctively Mediterranean in flavor, though sometimes they have more standard movie orchestration, and ''Tema Grottesco'' and ''Bolero Avventura'' inject a bit of playfulness into what's overall a solemn program. The music from La Dolce Vita doesn't have high points as striking, but is certainly diverse and usually cosmopolitan in tone, taking in lighthearted cocktail jazz, a cover of Pérez Prado's hit ''Patricia,'' circus-like mystery, and fetchingly spooky organ sounds. (Unfortunately it doesn't include the over the top histrionic cover of Little Richard's ''Ready Teddy'' featured in one nightclub scene.) Dividing the music of L'Avventura from the music of La Dolce Vita on this CD is a likeably goofy, overwrought pop vocal sung in phonetic English by Nico Fidenco, ''Trust Me,'' presumably because this was written by L'Avventura composer Fusco. It is curious that the liner notes, despite including some information about both films, have nothing to say about the soundtracks or the composers, especially considering that much of L'Avventura's music was written by Nino Rota, one of the most esteemed soundtrack composers in the history of Italian cinema. ~ Richie Unterberger
