Nu slechts € 15,99 After two full-lengths and a long-playing mini-album of increasing consistency, Megafaun's self-titled third album is an intentionally bold and self-confident step for the North Carolina-based trio. Equally infatuated with experimental music and traditional American forms, the band focuses both through the warm, blurry confines of turn-of-the-century indie rock. On the opening ''Real Slow,'' Megafaun's most stripped-down acoustic guitar lineup channels the Grateful Dead, a band whose own combination of experiments and tradition provide a template for Megafaun even if, beyond the first cut, they rarely sound too much like them. The experiments begin quickly with the gamelan-infused ''These Words,'' and continue with horn arrangements (''Isadora,'' ''Everything''), traditional songs exploded into collages (''Serene Return''), and fuzzed electronic instrumentals (''Postscript''). There is authentic gospel folk (''You Are the Light'') and Beach Boys/Wilco indie pop (''Second Friend''). Most of all, there are refrains and harmonies and the pleasing structures of music that is friendly and familiar. The music is both vague and big-hearted, a populist formula that leads to choruses like ''Everything came from everything/And it's everything we're headed for'' and the occasional mixed metaphor. It is all sold by Megafaun's familial sense of purpose (including harmonies by brothers Phil and Brad Cook) and general good nature. ~ Jesse Jarnow
