Nu slechts € 17,99 No point in attempting to reword (or is that remix?) the words of Fat Camp's Bill Brewster, dance music scholar and ZEvolution's liner notes author: ''Unlike a remix, which uses all the individual tracks from the original multi-track to create a new song, the re-edit uses only the finished master recording to re-organize the song into a more dynamic form.'' A project spearheaded by veteran U.K. DJ Greg Wilson, whose own work with tapes predated a wave of re-edits that (with the help of novice-friendly technology) permeated dance music during the 2000s' first decade, this disc takes a knife -- real or virtual -- to ZE, one of the premier left-field imprints of the late '70s and early '80s, best introduced on the expanded two-disc reissue of their Mutant Disco compilation. (Get that, at the very least, before this.) These re-edits don't necessarily put a more dynamic spin on the originals. Sometimes, they are less about increased dynamics and more about alternative functionality, as exemplified by Rub 'n' Tug, who merely slow Material's muscular, charging ''Bustin' Out'' (featuring the great Nona Hendryx) to a prowl. Other edits are relatively drastic. Special credit goes to Luke Howard and Felix Dickinson, who make Aural Exciters' ''Spooks in Space'' deliriously odd by teasing out and layering its chants, rippling water effects, and lunatic xylophone runs. Another highlight, Pilooski's twist on Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band's version of Irving Berlin's ''I'm an Indian Too,'' starts innocently enough but gradually intensifies into a state of storming otherness, and if it weren't for those occasional violin drags, it would, in stretches, be impossible to ID. The cheekiest of all is Todd Terje, whose ''Friendly Children'' edit calls out the link between Gichy Dan's ''On a Day Like Today'' and Theo Parrish's, er, ''Friendly Children.'' Enjoyable for ZE freaks, and quite useful for DJs. ~ Andy Kellman
