Michael J. Sheehy's work has always embraced life's seamy, abject side, his eclectic take on the blues rarely straying far from that tradition's core themes of redemption and damnation amid booze, violence, death, and old-fashioned bad luck. With These Hands sees Sheehy ambitiously weaving his preoccupations into a concept album about a fictional '50s London boxer, Francis Delaney. Although the storyline is hackneyed, Sheehy renders it with his unique artistry: just as he gives his own twist to the blues, so he reworks the stock coulda-been-a-contender tale, giving listeners reasons to care. The opening track, the brooding ballad ''Did You Hear About Delaney?'' outlines the story upfront, establishing dramatic tension: listeners know things will end badly, and that makes the narrative more poignant and powerful as it reveals the tragic flaw that brings about Delaney's downfall and the implacable trajectory runs its course. Rather than tell the story straightforwardly and in chronological order, Sheehy brings it to life with diverse voices and perspectives -- some provided by other vocalists -- theatrically capturing Delaney's world. Sheehy sings as Delaney, most memorably on the lilting childhood reminiscence ''Medal Made out of Tin,'' and the title track, which captures Delaney's hubris. Elsewhere, bandmembers and guests portray the boxer's girlfriend, trainers, corrupt promoters, anonymous associates, and his black American nemesis. Delaney's gritty, brutal environment resonates in an appropriately dark soundtrack, occasionally punctuated with harsh, distorted guitars, but Sheehy's sound is not monolithic. The album's closing suite underscores his versatility and his knack for delicate, melodic tunes, especially the heartbreaking ''Frankie My Darling'' (sung by Gemma Ray) and the valedictory ''Goodnight, Irene,'' a haunting a cappella version of the blues standard. While an album about boxing might sound unappealing, this is a knockout. Sheehy's a heavyweight songwriter and With These Hands finds him at the top of his game. ~ Wilson Neate
