The optimal place for listening to Creatures of an Hour, Still Corners debut album for Sub Pop, is either a misty, English countryside graveyard or a warm, cozy bed with blankets pulled up over your head. However you choose to listen to it, the mysterious and haunting beauty created by Greg Hughes? music and Tessa Murray?s vocals will enchant you in an alternately chilling and comforting manner. In the same way Broadcast and Stereolab, or looking further back to 4AD bands like This Mortal Coil, were able to cast spells of woven of reverb, musty keyboards, and the female voice, Still Corners can, too. Hughes surrounds Murray?s softly sung vocals with a simple but rich tapestry of echoing guitars and ancient sounding organs, giving her a cushy bed to float over like a crooning ghost. Unlike many singers who aim for the enigmatic angel approach and botch it by being either too ethereal or on the wrong side of pitch, Murray has a strength and grace to her vocals that give the melodies an extra level of melancholy power. Hughes, too, has a light touch and never goes overboard while creating atmosphere. His subtle approach lets you sink into the sounds, rather than being hit over the head and being told exactly what to feel. Though the album is built around a sense of nocturnal mystery, and songs like ?I Wrote in Blood? or ?Velveteen? have a creeping darkness at their core and sound like candidates for a remake of the Twin Peaks soundtrack, there are moments (?Into the Trees? or ?Submarine?) where the tempo rises above a murmur and the gently rocking psychedelic feel brings memories of Paisley Underground bands like the Rain Parade at their moodiest. All the comparisons aside, you don?t need to be up on your musical history to be hooked by Still Corners. You just have to like music with a spookiness running through it like blood, music that conjures magic but has a human heart. Still Corners have crafted a small gem of exactly that kind of music, and it would be a shame if it gets overlooked. ~ Tim Sendra
