Eastern Man Alone

Nu slechts € 12,50 Charles Tyler was quite productive during the 1960s -- not only as a sideman for the fearless Albert Ayler, but also, as a leader -- and one of the albums that he recorded as a leader during that period was Eastern Man Alone. This 1967 date (which ESP-Disk reissued on CD in 2010) finds the avant-garde saxman leading a pianoless, drumless quartet that also includes cellist David Baker and two acoustic bassists: Kent Brinkley and Brent McKesson. Tyler doesn't play any baritone sax this time -- strictly alto sax -- and he is quite passionate and expressive on that instrument whether he is embracing Baker's ''Le-Roi'' or three of his own compositions (''Cha-Lacy's Out East,'' ''Man Alone,'' and ''Eastern''). But saying that Tyler brings a great deal of passion to his alto is not to say that Eastern Man Alone is an exercise in blistering atonality from start to finish. In 1967, there were many free jazz recordings that smothered the listener with crushing density and took no prisoners whatsoever; this 48-minute CD, however, is relatively melodic. The melodies are quirky, abstract melodies, but they are melodies nonetheless. And those who listen to Tyler's stream of consciousness playing will closely, at times, hear hints of world music, including African and Asian. World music influenced a long list of jazz improvisers during the '60s (some of them avant-garde, some of them post-bop, some of them a combination of the two), and Tyler was no exception. Although not quite essential, Eastern Man Alone is solid and rewarding, and that unusual combination of instruments (alto sax, cello, two upright basses) certainly adds to the intrigue factor. ~ Alex Henderson
