On his first collection of new studio material in five years, and his 45th anniversary as a recording artist, Brazilian songwriter, poet, playwright, and novelist Chico Buarque issues his 27th album. While Carioca -- amazingly enough his first North American release -- participated in a gentle rapprochement with bossa and samba, on Chico he looks backward and forward simultaneously. Recorded with longtime collaborator guitarist and arranger Luiz Cláudio Ramos, the album is comprised of re-visioned older tunes, collaborations, and new compositions. The musical flavor walks a wide line between contemporary MPB, bossa, and blues with a passing glance at samba. Highlights include the opening ''Querido Diário,'' which originally appeared on 1971's Cotidiano. This version is fully orchestrated with flügelhorn, various guitars, piano, and the Quarteto Radamés Gnattali string quartet. Despite its full arrangement, its feel is spacious and light. Buarque's voice has deepened somewhat over the years, but it suits this version beautifully. ''Essa Pequena'' is a signature Brazilian-style blues. Accompanied by Ramos, bassist Jorge Helder, and star pianist João Reboucas, they accent the tune's jazzy feel with the violin of Nicolas Krassik and some scat singing by Buarque. ''Se Eu Soubesse'' was written by Buarque for vocalist Thais Gulin; she recorded it but here sings in duet with the composer and a beautiful chamber group that includes clarinet and harp. The samba ''Sou Eu'' was co-written with Ivan Lins and originally appeared on an album by Diogo Nogueira. This version features star drummer and singer Wilson das Neves in duet backed by a large modern samba group and strings. ''Nina'' is a gorgeous ballad with Argentinian overtones inside a waltz, thanks to the intuitive playing of Reboucas and haunting cello and accordion touches that flesh out the arrangement. The set closes with another samba in ''Sinha,'' which pairs old friends Buarque and guitarist João Bosco. The acoustic guitar interplay between Bosco and Ramos is nearly incendiary, with only a pair of percussionists backing them. Buarque's lead vocal is deeply expressive and Bosco's harmony underscores it empathetically. Chico is a fitting follow-up to Carioca -- its production is a bit less polished, but it lets the instruments and Buarque's utterly strange and mysterious voice shine through his carefully crafted tunes. ~ Thom Jurek
