Vocal and instrumental excerpts from the soundtracks of a couple dozen westerns from 1946-1960 are featured on this CD, which pushes things near the absolute limit of what a single disc can hold, adding up to more than 79 minutes of music. With selections from movies both familiar (The Magnificent Seven, High Noon, The Searchers, 3:10 to Yuma, Johnny Guitar, My Darling Clementine, Shane) and relatively obscure to the non-Western fan, it's a worthy and wide-ranging anthology of Western soundtrack music, though an uneven one. With exceptions like the classic theme to The Magnificent Seven, the vocal numbers certainly outclass the instrumental ones, which usually serve more as atmosphere than individually memorable songs or performances. Some of the vocal outings are so-so, too, but there are a good number of excellent ones. Vaughn Monroe's ''Riders in the Sky'' epitomizes the soaring, haunting melodrama with which Western movies, and Western soundtracks in particular, are strongly identified. Frankie Laine, whose unabashedly intense crooning was particularly suited for the Western genre, shines on ''3:10 to Yuma,'' and to a lesser degree on ''Gunfight at the O.K. Corral'' (not the same song as the classic narrative of the same title later recorded by Walter Brennan). In a different, less macho bag, Julie London does a gorgeously muted, slinky theme for Man of the West (in which she also starred), and Peggy Lee does a nice moody one for Johnny Guitar. Marty Robbins was also a natural for Western tunes, and while his ''The Hanging Tree'' is hardly rare, as it was a Top Forty pop hit, it's nice to hear in any context. Jimmy Young's ''The Man from Laramie'' is stellar earnest Western balladeering, and for those with a hankering for the cornball, Tex Ritter's ''Wichita'' will fit the bill. Plus the Sons of the Pioneers, who are among the kingpins of the Western style, are heard on ''Wagons West'' and the theme to ''The Searchers.'' Certainly some aficionados will argue that some of these songs aren't the definitive performances; numerous classics are missing, including ones that show up on the box set Songs of the West, the best such compilation, and you'll probably have to skip around. No matter what your taste, you'll probably enjoy at least half of this a lot if you have any appreciation for the genre. ~ Richie Unterberger
