Solomon Islands (Cry Of The Ancestors)

Nu slechts € 17,99 Though the Solomons have been fairly isolated for centuries, their music holds some surprising similarities to other sounds around the world. Here, a pan pipe-based sound built around Are'are traditions is presented by a cultural troupe of sorts from the island of Malaita. Many of the slower pieces presented here are shockingly similar to Andean songs -- not just because of the surface similarity of the pan pipes, but the full spectrum of pan pipe sound and melodic structure, a certain rhythm in the bass (here performed most often with a thong-o-phone, a set of bass tubes thumped with a thong), and a mournful vocal delivery by a solo singer. When it isn't in an Andean sort of sound, though, the Narasirato group moves into higher-speed territory, with inflections of Polynesian rhythms, interlocking melodic lines, and complex riffs that carry the playful songs into a different category. All of this makes for a diverse album -- although the pieces are nominally traditional works, they are not traditional in the sense of old classics being dusted off, but songs written about and within the tradition (and with a spattering of Blue Man Group influences in their rubber-on-bamboo rhythms), and contemporary compositions dealing with the realities of cultural adaptation. Musically, the Solomon Islands: The Sounds of Bamboo compilation from Multicultural Media may be a more appropriate entry point for curious listeners, but this one makes a fine follow-up. ~ Adam Greenberg
