Gene Clark was one of the most gifted vocalists and songwriters of his generation, but following two years with the Byrds as they first tasted success in the mid-'60s, his career seemed to be one disappointment and miscalculation after another, and it's sad but rather typical that one of Clark's most satisfying solo efforts, 1972's Roadmaster, never even received a proper release in the United States during his lifetime. Clark was signed to A&M in 1972 when he began work on an album with producer Terry Melcher, but Melcher soon dropped out of the project and engineer Chris Hinshaw took over the sessions. A&M pulled the plug on the project when they felt the partying in the studio was getting out of control, but if the sessions were less than professional, you'd never know it to listen to the results -- Clark's voice is as clear, resonant, and emotionally forceful as ever, and with a handful of fine originals and inspired covers on deck and a backing band that included Clarence White and Spooner Oldham, this ranks with the finest and most soulful country-rock of the '70s. When Clark began enjoying some chart success in the Netherlands, A&M's Dutch division coupled the eight tunes recorded for the scrapped album with two songs he'd recorded in 1970 with the reunited Byrds (it says a lot about their regard for their former bandmate that while Roger McGuinn and David Crosby weren't on speaking terms at the time, they popped by the studio at different times to help Clark out), and a stray track recorded with members of the Flying Burrito Brothers, and released the results as Roadmaster. Despite the patchwork nature of the project, Roadmaster sounds both coherent and thoroughly inspired; the various groupings of musicians all give their level best on these sessions, and Clark's haunting vocals and elegiac songs are a potent reminder of what a unique talent he was. Roadmaster fared will in the Netherlands and sold well in America as an import, but for whatever reason, A&M opted not to release it domestically, and given the strength of the material, this seems like a wasted opportunity that verges on the tragic; if this music was too contemplative to top the charts, it could have at least expanded the cult following Clark's talent deserved. ~ Mark Deming
